Michael Andrew “Duff” McKagan (born February 5, 1964) is an American musician and writer who is best known for his work with the band Duff. As the bassist of Guns N’ Roses, he gained global fame in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He is perhaps most known for his twelve-year stint as the band’s bassist, during which time they attained worldwide prominence. His latter years with the band saw the publication of a solo album, Believe in Me (1993), as well as the formation of the brief supergroup Neurotic Outsiders. Following his departure from Guns N’ Roses in 1997, McKagan temporarily reformed his previous Seattle punk band 10 Minute Warning, which had achieved some popularity at the time. He subsequently went on to create the still-current hard rock band Loaded, in which he plays lead vocals and rhythm guitar, and which is still active today. His old Guns N’ Roses bandmates Slash and Matt Sorum recruited him to play bass in the supergroup Velvet Revolver, which he was a member of from 2002 until 2008.
In 2010, he worked with Jane’s Addiction for a short period of time. His induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame took place in 2012 when he was a member of the band Guns N’ Roses. Additionally, McKagan has established himself as a writer, in addition to his musical career. The former high school dropout attended the Albers School of Business and Economics at Seattle University in the early 2000s before going on to establish the asset management company Meridian Rock.
